Setting Leadership Boundaries; Personal and Professional Growth

As a leader, it is critical that boundaries are considered and set in place, not just in the work-life balance, but also in the workplace in general. Creating leadership boundaries places you in a position to devote your attention to the work that matters, to better support those around you. However, it is critical that those boundaries are communicated effectively to ensure that relationships are not hurt in the process.

Henry Cloud can be quoted saying, “You get what you create and you get what you allow.”

Ensuring that you create boundaries with your work day is important, because only you know when you are most efficient and effective, not only as a leader, but as a contributor to the work you are doing. If you know that you are able to pump out more quality content or work in the morning, then you must be very protective of that time. If your afternoons typically fill up with meetings, but that is when you are able to have uninterrupted time in your office, then you must protect that time as well. Consider setting boundaries when it comes to your to-do lists, because it could either positively or negatively impact the work you are able to do.

Leadership Boundaries Work Both Ways

Creating boundaries also means understanding what is expected of you and ensuring that you are able to do just that. Creating boundaries in this way will drastically shape the relationships you have with those you work with, because it will communicate to them that you are able to get your work done efficiently, or… you are always behind on your work. Every company knows which type of co-worker and boss is more appealing. Be intentional with the responsibilities you have and carve out the appropriate boundaries so you do not negatively impact the culture of your workplace.

Boundary enforcement is challenging, because it may be met with resistance from those who otherwise do not necessarily like what you are doing. However, over time, boundaries can help you build trust, because it will allow for the workplace to thrive in a way that is beneficial to all.
