Your Impact As A Leader - "Who Am I Helping Grow Today?"

As a leader, one of the most critical questions you can ask yourself daily is, “Who am I helping grow today?” While life can become busy and our to-do lists increase, developing those around you often looks like bringing them along for the ride into your life of leadership. Your impact as a leader matters far beyond the logistics and numbers.

“Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.”

Jack Welch

Your line of work may not allow you to empower those around you through tasks and to-do lists, but the impact leaders have on those around them goes well beyond the projects. While it is beneficial for other employees to see the logistics behind the projects, their interactions with you each and every day are shaping them into leaders as well.

Here are some ways to consider your impact as a leader:

  1. How are you handling the people you work with each day? This goes well beyond employee interaction, because many relationships developed through work carry into our communities. Be intentional with the way you respond, the way you speak, and the way you interact with the people around you. Be mindful of the words you choose and the approach you take with others. The degree to which you value others will directly impact the value your potential leaders place on those same people.
  2. What value are you placing on time-management? One of the most challenging parts of leadership is being able to maintain control of the time you spend accomplishing the tasks set before you. Are you consistently behind on projects or are you always working ahead? Knowing your limit is important, but disciplining yourself in time management will pay off by allowing those around you to benefit from habits that truly work to your betterment and the betterment of your company.
  3. When it comes to problem solving, how are you reacting in high-intensity moments? An area of leadership that many often overlook is the ability to respond well under pressure and think through the best solution. In many cases, in many businesses, troubles escalate due to the lack of time spent thinking through a wise solution. Challenging does not equate to impossible, and as a leader, one of the best ways we can shape those around us is by reminding ourselves that others are watching how we navigate difficulties. Before you lose your cool, remember, someone could potentially model your behavior. If everyone mirrored your responses, would your company be healthy or hurting?

“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.”

John C. Maxwell

The best leaders who have ever lived have put others above themselves. Instead of sprinting through the darkness of life to get to the light, they slow down to bring people with them. They help others to learn and understand what they’ve accomplished in life.
