Intentionally Leading and Influencing

A great portion of leadership is not simply leading a vision or change in an organization, but leading the people in it. How often do you reflect on the way your employees or people you work with respond to their work? Oftentimes, it is easy to fixate on deadlines and performance, but very few take the time to understand why their employees are functioning at a certain pace or level, good or bad. 

The fastest way to demonstrate that you value your employees to lead by example. If you want a strong work ethic to surround you in leadership, are you an example worth following? If you want a workplace free of emotion and frustration, are you leading by example? As a leader, we must ultimately check ourselves before we even consider assessing others.

Effective leaders effectively communicate. As a leader, are you finding ways to communicate with each person in the organization according to their needs? What may work for you through written communication may require verbal, in person communication with another? 

Many individuals are highly motivated by praise and rewards, whether a tangible or intangible gift. Perhaps your people simply need your time and attention, and that will speak volumes for the support they feel from you. Influencing behavior in the workplace comes down to the relationships that you intentionally build. 

Finally, are you growing and improving? Do your people feel you have placed yourself in a position where you are open to feedback, are willing to change, and are seeking improvement both relationally and professionally? A leader that is growing is a leader that is easy to follow. 

A good question to ask yourself as you step into a new week: are you intentionally influencing, because whether you realize it or not, your influence is happening – you decide if it is positive or not.
