Creating Positive Habits - In The Workplace and Personally

Positive habits have the ability to change your day-to-day life for the better. Creating positive habits keeps you moving in a positive trajectory – pointed toward your goal. Once a habit is planted, continually pursuing that habit will lead you to feel fulfilled both professionally and personally.

Through creating positive habits, your brain becomes trained to be more efficient.

In fact, there are many habits that you already have implemented in your life; for example, wearing your seatbelt while driving or brushing your teeth twice a day.

Simple steps can lead to bigger change. Let’s take a look at those steps below.

Getting Started

It is estimated that it takes around 66 days to form a habit and for it to become an automatic response in your life.

To start, setting a specific goal will help direct you in the path of creating such a habit. For example in the workplace one habit you could put into practice would be to dedicate a certain number of hours per week to a specific project. By doing this, you are becoming more effective and efficient during your work week.

In a personal setting, one habit many people aspire to is to get “X” number of steps each day or drink “X” ounces of water each day.

TIP: Chances are when you write something down, the more likely you will be to follow through. Write down those goals, and share them with those who will keep you accountable. Use a habit tracker or journal daily to track your progress and to keep yourself motivated.

Sustaining

Once you have a goal in mind that you want to become a habit, create for yourself a plan that includes steps you’ll take in order for this task to become a habit in your life. And remember, repetition is key when forming new habits and keeping them.

Strong habits build consistency and routine. Through creating positive habits you will create a positive lifestyle. This can be applicable in both your personal life as well as your professional life. Through this work you will feel fulfilled, reach your goals, and grow.

If you are trying to achieve 10,000 steps in a day, one active choice you can take is to get up at work and walk around for 5 minutes each hour. This active choice each day is one way you can achieve your personal goal and create a positive habit each day.

Another way to keep yourself accountable, especially at work, is to block out times in your calendar that allow you to dedicate specific time to work on that specific project.

Not only do these steps keep you accountable, they are a way to reach your goals and create a positive habit in your daily routine.

Get Creative

Most of all, have fun with this new habit you are trying to create!

Chances are if it isn’t fun or you don’t find it enjoyable, you will not follow through. Consider ways that you can change up your routine while still including those new habits you are fostering.

For example, ask a co-worker to go on a walk together.

If you are setting aside time to work on a specific project, switch up where you work on it.

Through all of this, having a support system of people to encourage you can be extremely helpful. And remember to give yourself grace on the days when you don’t meet your goals exactly. It is a learning experience and not everyday will be perfect.
