Leading Your Team Through Organizational Change

Winston Churchill once said, “However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results.”

As a leader, one of the hardest tasks is walking your company and/or people through an organizational change. Not only are you tasked with implementing the change, you are also tasked with helping everyone understand and see the value of the change. This can be challenging, especially when it comes to interpersonal relationships.

Here are some practical tips to put into play if you find yourself in this position:

  1. Have a clear vision. You wiil likely communicate this vision to multiple people in multiple ways. Ensuring it is clear and easy to understand, follow, and execute is pivotal in your organization and others understanding why the change is necessary.
  2. Involve your entire team. Empowering your frontline leaders to help communicate this change will be key in ensuring that everyone is managed in a way that they feel seen and important. Whether you are the head of the company or one of the frontline leaders, your investment in your people matters greatly.
  3. Ensure you have effective communication. Be intentional that those helping you communicate your vision and change are also supporting this change the same way that you are. Frequent communication is important, especially if this is an on-going change.
  4. Provide training for the change. People do not always show up knowing what is expected; this must be taught and communicated.

One of the most important aspects of any organizational change is the people in the organization. Helping them see the value in the change and join in the vision will provide opportunity for the vision to be brought out successfully.
