This type of communication refers to the distribution of information from the top of the company down. In this form of communication, employees are informed of internal company news. As you can assume, this form of communication is the opposite of internal upward communication. These two communication types go hand in hand. It is important that messages and communication are happening both from the top down and the bottom up. This allows for effective business to occur. It is vital that these both are demonstrated within the company. It is quite possible that employees will become frustrated and unheard if only downward communication is established. This creates balance in the company.
Internal Lateral Communication
Lateral communication happens between employees of equal rank within the organization. This is the most frequent type of communication that occurs within a business. Lateral communication creates a space to foster collaboration between peers. This is a key form of communication. It allows for ideas to be shared, problems to be solved, increases team cohesiveness, and much more. The main goal of this communication is so that the group is aware of the goals of not only the team, but also the company as a whole.
External Communication
This last form of communication is one that doesn’t occur within the company, but still plays a vital role nonetheless. This type of communication deals with the exchange of information from your company to outside sources. This communication should be a top priority because it creates relationships with other sources and builds relationships with them. When this type of communication is positive, your business’ growth and success will be positively influenced. However, something to keep in mind is that this form of communication is high risk. If not executed correctly, the reputation of your company could be damaged.
